Infant care centre vs grandparents for childcare, what did you choose?

Both of us work full-time, maternity leave ending soon. Infant care has long waitlists and costs even after subsidy. Grandparents offer to help but they're getting on in age. How did you decide, and any regrets?

We did grandparents for the first year then infant/childcare after, and I'd recommend that combo if your parents are willing and able. Reasons: an infant under 12 months benefits from one-on-one care and grandparents give that love, plus it's far cheaper. BUT be brutally honest about their age and energy, caring for a baby is physically exhausting and if your mum has back or knee issues it's unfair and unsafe. Around 15-18 months we moved our kid to childcare for socialisation, structured activities, and to give the grandparents a break before they burned out. Practical steps: 1) Apply for infant/childcare waitlists NOW regardless, they're long, you can decline later. 2) Check the subsidies (basic + additional subsidy based on household income) on the ECDA side, it lowers cost a lot. 3) If grandparents help, contribute money for their expenses and give them clear days off, don't take them for granted. 4) Align on discipline and screen-time rules early to avoid the classic grandparent-spoiling friction. The hybrid gave us the best of both.

Childcare pro: kids fall sick less as they grow because they build immunity early, and they're school-ready with routines. Con: constant sickness in the first 6 months of centre life, prepare to take a LOT of childcare leave. We underestimated how often we'd be called to fetch a feverish kid. Have a backup plan for those days, that's where grandparents on standby are gold.

My only regret with full grandparent care was the boundary issues, they raised our kid their way and undoing some habits later was hard. If you go this route, agree on the non-negotiables (no phone during meals, sleep routine, no feeding junk to stop crying) upfront and revisit gently. Their heart is in the right place but consistency matters for the child. Set expectations kindly but clearly.

Consider the location logistics too. Childcare near your home vs near your office changes your entire daily routine. We picked one near home so either parent could do drop-off/pickup and it was near the grandparents for backup. The daily commute triangle matters more than you'd think when you're juggling work and a sick kid. Map it out realistically.
