Friend showing signs of depression, how do I actually help without making it worse?

Helped a friend through this, and the biggest thing I learned: you don't need to fix it, you need to stay. What worked: 1) show up consistently without pressure, 'no need to reply, just letting you know I'm around' texts, 2) invite to low-key normal things (kopi, walk) not heavy 'we need to talk' sessions, 3) listen without jumping to advice or 'think positive', just 'that sounds really hard', 4) gently encourage professional help and offer to go with him to the GP or help him call a helpline, 5) look after yourself too, you can't pour from empty. If he ever mentions self-harm or you're worried he's in danger, treat it seriously and contact SOS (1767) or the National Care Hotline (1771) right away. I'm not a professional, please lean on official resources for the serious stuff.
