Infant care vs grandparents for childcare, what did you choose?

Both my wife and I work full-time and our maternity and paternity leave is ending soon. We're torn between putting our baby in infant care or asking my parents to help look after the child. What are the real pros and cons you've experienced?

From my experience, both work, it depends on your family situation. Grandparent care is loving, flexible and cheaper, and the baby bonds with family, but it can strain the grandparents physically and sometimes causes friction over parenting methods and discipline. Set expectations kindly and consider giving them an allowance and regular breaks. Infant care centres are structured, the child socialises early and gets used to routine, and there are government subsidies that make it more affordable for working parents, especially the additional subsidy for working mothers. The waitlists for good centres are long though, so apply early. Cost, your parents' health and willingness, and how comfortable you are with someone else's routine all matter. We eventually used a mix, grandparents some days and infant care others, which balanced the load and gave the baby both worlds.

We chose infant care and were happy, but I'll be honest about both sides. Grandparent care saved money and my in-laws adored the baby, but with our first child the differing views on feeding and screen time caused tension, so communication is everything if you go that route. For our second we used infant care and the routine, hygiene standards and early social exposure were great, and the subsidies plus the working mother's subsidy brought the cost down a lot. The downside is babies fall sick more often early on from mixing with others, and you need backup care for those sick days. Apply super early because good centres fill up. My advice: consider your parents' health and willingness honestly, don't assume it's free help, and whatever you choose, align as a couple first. A hybrid can be the best of both.
