New parents, what government schemes and payouts should we actually be claiming?

First baby arriving soon and I keep hearing about Baby Bonus, CDA, MediSave grant, and various payouts but it's a blur. What should new parents in SG actually sign up for, and is there a deadline I might miss if I'm clueless?

New-ish parent, here's the practical checklist. Baby Bonus has two parts, the Cash Gift paid out in instalments, and the Child Development Account (CDA) which is a co-savings account, the government matches what you put in up to a cap plus a First Step grant that lands even if you contribute nothing. Open the CDA with a participating bank and use it for approved childcare, medical and enrichment, it stretches your dollar hugely. There's also a MediSave grant for newborns credited automatically to the baby's CPF MediSave to help with health insurance and jabs. Enrol in the schemes ideally around birth registration, a lot is now streamlined through the government portal, but don't sleep on opening the CDA because the matching only works on money you actually deposit. Also check parental leave entitlements with your employer. Set aside an afternoon, do it all in one sitting, future you will thank you.

Max out the CDA matching if you can, it's basically free money, dollar for dollar up to the cap depending on birth order. We treated it as a no-brainer, deposited to the cap, and used it to offset infant care fees later. Missing the match is leaving real cash on the table. Just don't deposit more than the matched cap in one go expecting more match.

Beyond the baby-specific schemes, check the childcare and infant care subsidies for when you go back to work, the basic and additional subsidies depend on mum's working status and household income and they're substantial. Also look at parenthood tax rebates and reliefs when filing. The payouts get attention but the ongoing subsidies save you far more over the years.
