With COE crossing 100k, is owning a car in Singapore still worth it, or is Grab and MRT the smarter move?

Cat A COE recently hovered around 100k and my wife wants a car now that we have a newborn. I did a rough calculation and a basic Japanese sedan comes to nearly 160k over ten years all-in. I take the MRT to work fine, but the convenience for family outings is tempting. For car owners with young kids, do you actually feel it's worth it, or would you go back to ride-hailing if you could redo it?

I bought a car right after my first kid was born and honestly for a young family it changed our lives, but let me be clear about the real cost. My Cat A car all-in with COE, ARF, insurance, road tax, petrol, parking and servicing works out to roughly 1.8k a month over ten years. When you're lugging a baby, a stroller, a diaper bag and a car seat, Grab surge pricing at 2am for a fever run to KKH is not something you want to gamble on. That said, if we had no kids, I'd 100% stick to MRT and Grab, the maths only tips over because of the newborn logistics. Be honest about whether it's a want or a genuine need for your family stage.

Depends heavily on where you stay and work. If you're in a mature central estate near the MRT like me in Toa Payoh, a car is a pure luxury and mostly sits idle. But my brother stays in Punggol and works in Tuas, his commute by public transport is nearly two hours each way, so for him a car genuinely buys back three hours of life a day. Do the actual door-to-door time comparison for your specific routes before deciding. Geography matters more than the COE number.

Emotional truth from someone who caved, we bought and I don't regret it despite knowing it's financially irrational. With a newborn and my elderly mother who can't take long walks, the car removed a layer of daily stress that no spreadsheet captures. Rushing to the PD, ferrying my mum to SGH, ad-hoc grocery runs, it all became easier. Just go in knowing you're paying a large premium for convenience and peace of mind, not making a smart investment. Sometimes that's an acceptable trade at a certain life stage.

People always compare to Grab but forget the middle option, car sharing like GetGo or BlueSG. We use GetGo for our IKEA runs and weekend zoo trips, book by the hour, no COE, no insurance headache, no parking at home to pay for. Works out to maybe 300 a month for us. It's not as convenient as having a car in your carpark, but for a family that only needs a car occasionally, it's a genuine sweet spot most people overlook. Try it for a few months before committing 160k.

I ran the numbers obsessively and stayed car-free even with two kids. We spend maybe 600 to 800 a month on Grab and occasional car rental for weekend trips, which is a third of what owning would cost. That's a 12k a year saving going straight into the kids' education fund. Yes there are annoying moments waiting for a ride in the rain, but for pure economics, unless you drive daily for work, ownership rarely beats ride-hailing at these COE prices. The convenience premium is just very expensive.
