How to prepare for BMT before enlisting? Quite scared honestly

Enlisting in a few months and honestly nervous. Not very fit, never been away from home long. What should I do in the months before to make BMT less of a shock, physically and mentally?

ORD-ed a while back, BMT feels huge before but it's very survivable. Physical prep matters most, start NOW: 1) build running base, aim to jog 2.4km comfortably, that's the IPPT distance and it makes everything easier, 2) do push-ups and sit-ups daily, even 3 sets, your body adapts fast, 3) walk/hike with a light bag to condition for load. If you're really unfit you might be posted to the longer BMT (extra weeks) which is honestly a blessing, they ease you in. Mental prep: 1) accept you'll be tired and it's temporary, everyone's in the same boat and you make solid friends, 2) learn basic admin, ironing, polishing boots, folding, watch a few videos. Bring the right small stuff (foot powder, good socks, blister plasters). It's a mental game more than physical. You'll be fine, thousands do it every year. Verify current IPPT/BMT specifics via official NS channels.

The mental part is honestly bigger than people admit and it's what you're really nervous about, the being-away-from-home bit, not the push-ups. The first week feeling cut off from home is genuinely the hardest stretch for most people, including me, but here's the thing, after that first week you adjust faster than you'd believe, the platoon quickly becomes a kind of family because you're all suffering and laughing through the same thing together, and book-out day feels absolutely amazing in a way you'll never forget. It's temporary, it has a clear end, and literally thousands of ordinary guys who also 'never been away from home' get through it every year, you're not uniquely unprepared. Don't psych yourself out imagining the worst, the anticipation is worse than the reality. You'll surprise yourself.

Just run, seriously, if there's one thing you do in the months before, build your 2.4km base, because BMT becomes maybe 50 percent easier when you're not gasping through every physical activity, and so much of the daily routine is physical, fast marches, PT sessions, timed runs. I couldn't run 2.4km without nearly dying at the start, but roughly eight weeks of consistent jogging before enlistment completely changed my experience, I went in able to keep up instead of always being the guy at the back holding everyone up. Start slow, even a run-walk, and just be consistent three times a week, your body adapts surprisingly fast at this age. Don't wait until you're 'fit enough to start', starting is how you get fit. This one habit pays off more than anything else.

Learn the small admin stuff beforehand, it sounds trivial but it genuinely saves you grief when everything in BMT is rushed and timed to the minute, practise ironing your uniform (the No.4), polishing your boots to standard, and folding things properly, because the guys who walk in already able to do these aren't scrambling and getting tekan-ed while the section waits. There are plenty of videos showing exactly how. Also, invest in the right small comfort items before you go: good foot powder, several pairs of decent socks, and blister plasters, because blisters absolutely wrecked my first field outing and were completely avoidable. Sort your feet and your basic admin skills in advance and you remove two of the most common early miseries. Do check the official NS packing list and current requirements so you bring what's actually allowed and needed.
