What I do instead now: I self-insure by auto-transferring what a premium would cost into a separate 'pet fund' savings account. After a few years that buffer covered a 4k dental+growth removal. Steps: 1) get quotes early, 2) read exclusions carefully (breed-specific, dental, pre-existing), 3) if you're disciplined, a dedicated savings pot can work as well or better. Either way, plan for the big bill.
