How do I actually make good use of my SkillsFuture credits?

I have SkillsFuture credit sitting there and the mid-career top-up too. I don't want to waste it on some random course. What's a smart way to use it for actual career value?

Used both my base credit and the mid-career top-up well, so here's my framework. First, don't pick a course, pick a career goal, then find the course that serves it, otherwise you end up with a random cake-decorating cert that does nothing for your income. The mid-career top-up (the larger sum for those 40+) is specifically meant for substantial reskilling toward jobs in demand, so use it on longer accredited programmes, not one-day workshops. Check the official SkillsFuture course directory and filter for courses tied to growth sectors and recognised certs. I put mine toward a data analytics programme that had industry recognition and it directly helped me switch roles. Also look at the SCTP (SkillsFuture Career Transition Programme) if you're changing fields, some are heavily subsidised and job-linked. Don't rush to burn it, a well-chosen course beats spending just because it's "free".

The mid-career top-up has more restrictions on which courses qualify than the base credit, so check eligibility on the portal before you commit. Also many WSQ and part-time diploma courses are subsidised on top of the credit, so your out-of-pocket can be tiny. Stack the subsidies.

I wasted my first tranche on a photography course I never used, so learn from me. Second time I asked "will this get me a raise or a new job", if no, I don't spend it. Ended up doing a project management cert that actually appears in job ads. Be ruthless about relevance.
