What's it like interviewing at a local bank in Singapore?

Got an interview coming up with one of the local banks for a mid-level role. What's the process like, how many rounds, and what do they actually look for? Any tips from people who've been through it?

Went through the process and found it more rigorous and formal than my previous fintech interviews. Several rounds, a good amount of behavioural questioning, and they really dig into your experience with numbers and specifics. One thing that stood out, they cared a lot about how I handle risk and compliance, even for a non-compliance role, so weave that awareness into your answers. Also expect some to ask about your reason for leaving current job carefully, they're wary of flight risks. The vibe in interviews was professional and a bit conservative, so match that energy, be polished and measured, not overly casual. It can feel drawn out and bureaucratic, but that's a preview of the culture. If you value stability and brand name, worth it. Prep your STAR stories and know your numbers cold.

My experience was actually pleasant, so don't go in terrified. Yes multiple rounds, but the interviewers were professional and fair. For a mid-level role they focused on my domain expertise and whether I could hit the ground running, plus stakeholder management since banks are matrixed and political. Be ready to explain how you navigate different departments and get things done despite process. They also assess if you're the type to stay, so signal commitment. Practical tips, the process is slow so keep other options warm and don't put all hopes on one, follow up politely if it goes quiet. Negotiate at offer stage, there's a structured band but some flex on join bonus or level. Overall it's a solid, stable place to work, just be patient with the deliberate pace, that's banking culture here.

Ex-bank HR here. Our process for mid-level was usually three to four touchpoints and yes it's slower than startups because of internal approvals and background checks. What we screened hard for, integrity and compliance-mindedness, because banking is heavily regulated and one rogue hire is a risk. Expect questions on how you handled a difficult situation, an ethical dilemma, or a mistake. We also valued cultural fit and longevity, red flags were frequent job changes without good reason. Tips, know the bank's recent news and strategy, show genuine interest not just I need a job, and be ready for behavioural questions with specific examples. Salary negotiation happens at the end and there's usually a band, so anchor sensibly. Be professional and patient, the slowness is just how banks are.

Interviewed at two local banks last year, got an offer from one. Expect multiple rounds, typically HR screen, then hiring manager, then often a panel or skip-level, and sometimes a case or technical assessment depending on the role. They're quite structured and process-driven, so be patient, it can drag over weeks. What they look for beyond skills is stability and fit, they like people who won't job-hop and who understand the regulated, compliance-heavy environment. Show you're reliable and can work within processes. For mid-level, they'll probe your track record with concrete examples, use the STAR format. Compensation-wise they're competitive but not the wildest payers, the trade-off is stability and brand. Dress smart, be professional, and don't be surprised by the number of rounds, it's normal for them.
