Driving to JB for the weekend, is it worth the jam and VEP hassle vs taking the bus?
Thinking of a JB weekend trip. Driving means flexibility but the causeway jams and now the VEP thing stresses me out. Bus is cheaper but then no car to move around JB. For regular JB-goers, what's actually the smarter move these days?

Regular JB-goer here. Driving is worth it ONLY if you plan to move around a lot in JB, malls, eateries spread out, maybe Desaru. Register your VEP properly and tag it well ahead, don't wait till the last week, and top up your Touch n Go and TnG eWallet for tolls before you go. Cross at off-peak, we leave SG super early Saturday like before 7am and come back late Sunday night or early Monday dawn to dodge the worst jams. If you're just going to one mall near the checkpoint to eat, shop and massage, honestly take the bus or even walk across via the RTS-adjacent routes and Grab in JB, way less stress and you can nap. Match the mode to your itinerary, not to habit.
We stopped driving and just bus in then Grab everywhere in JB. Grab there is stupidly cheap, a full day of rides costs less than SG petrol plus tolls plus the parking stress. No VEP nonsense, no jam behind the wheel, we sleep on the bus. Only downside is lugging shopping bags back, but we plan light.
If you drive, make sure your car insurance covers Malaysia and carry a bit of cash for small stuff. Also fuel up in JB, it's far cheaper there, just remember foreign cars must keep the tank three-quarters full when leaving SG or you get fined at the checkpoint. Also register your VEP and settle any outstanding Malaysian traffic fines before you go, they can flag you at the gantry. Small rules that catch first-timers off guard and turn a fun trip into a headache.

Timing is everything regardless of mode. Friday evening and Sunday evening are murder both directions. If you can take Friday off and come back Monday morning, the causeway is a different world. Also check the jam cameras and traffic apps before you leave, sometimes one checkpoint is clear while the other is stacked.
