Weekend jams at the causeway look insane on the news. Everyone says JB is cheap for groceries, food, massage. But with the queues and petrol, is it really worth going for just a day trip?

Regular JB-goer here, worth it IF you play the timing game, brutal if you don't. My rules: go on a weekday if you can, never Saturday morning. If weekend, cross before 7am and come back before 3pm or after 9pm, avoid the deadly 4 to 8pm return jam. Use the QR code immigration lanes, way faster now. For a family, the exchange rate makes groceries, dining, haircuts, massage and dental genuinely much cheaper, easily offsetting petrol and toll if you buy in bulk. But for a single person just going for one meal, honestly not worth 3 hours of your life stuck at the checkpoint. Fill up petrol there too (three-quarter tank rule to exit). Go with a proper list and make the trip count, don't just wander.

Check the causeway traffic cameras and the crowd apps before you go, seriously saves your sanity. I've turned back before because the jam was 2 hours. Don't go in blind on a long weekend, that's asking for pain sia.

We take the bus or train instead of driving to skip the car jam entirely. Grab on the JB side is dirt cheap. The RTS link when it opens will change everything, but for now public transport across is underrated. No parking stress somemore.

Depends what you value. My retired parents go weekly, they have time so the queue doesn't bother them and they save a lot on daily stuff. For working folks with limited weekends, the opportunity cost is real. Not a money question, a time question.
