Just got retrenched at 45, feeling lost. What are my first moves?

Company did a restructuring and my whole department went. 20 years experience, mid-management. I'm in shock and worried about ageism in the job market. What should I focus on in the first month?

Been retrenched at 47, came out the other side, so hear me out. First month, do these in order. One, sort the money: confirm your retrenchment package in writing, check if it meets the norm (often around 2 weeks to a month per year of service for companies that pay it), and file for it properly. Two, don't rage-apply to 100 jobs in week one while emotional, you'll come across desperate. Take a week to breathe, then update LinkedIn and CV to emphasise outcomes and cost savings, not just job titles. Three, tap your network hard, at our level most roles come through people, not portals. Message ex-colleagues and let them know you're looking, specifically. Four, register with WSG/e2i, they have Career Matching Services and the mid-career support schemes are real. On ageism: it exists, but 20 years of judgment is a selling point, position yourself as someone who stabilises teams, not someone clinging to a title. Consider fractional, contract or consulting roles too, they often convert. You will land, momentum beats panic.

From the hiring side: 45 with 20 years isn't a liability if you show energy and adaptability in the interview. The candidates who struggle are the ones who act entitled or can't explain what they'd do differently. Show you're current and hungry and the age matters far less than people fear.

Retrenchment at that age is scary but I know several people who bounced back stronger, some into consulting or contract roles that paid more. Register with WSG career coaching, it's free and the coach helped me reframe my whole pitch. Don't isolate yourself, that's the real trap.
