First-timer to JB by car on weekend, how to avoid the crazy jam?

Planning to drive into Johor Bahru for a weekend food and shopping trip. I hear the Causeway jams can be hours long. Any tips on timing, which checkpoint to use, and what I need to prepare? First time driving across.

I do the JB run often and my golden rule is never cross at the obvious times. Friday evening, Saturday morning, and Sunday evening are packed. I prefer going in on Saturday at dawn and returning Sunday very early morning. Check the LTA or Causeway traffic camera feeds before you leave so you can pick the less jammed checkpoint on the day. Prepare your VEP tag properly because Malaysia enforces it now, and settle any outstanding fines online first or you can be stopped. Bring your passport, IU working for the toll, and keep small change. Once in JB, use Grab within the city so you don't stress about parking. Watch your belongings and don't leave valuables visible in the car. Go with a relaxed mindset because some waiting is unavoidable.

From my experience, timing is everything for a JB drive. Weekends are the worst, so if you must go on a weekend, cross super early, like before 7am, and come back either mid-afternoon or late at night to dodge the peak. Avoid public holidays and the eve of holidays entirely unless you enjoy sitting in your car for three hours. Woodlands via the Causeway is shorter distance but jams badly, while Tuas Second Link is longer to drive but often smoother, so weigh which suits your destination. Make sure you have a valid Autopass card and VEP registered for your car, top up enough for tolls, and have some ringgit or an e-wallet. Fill petrol to at least three-quarters in Singapore because of the rule. Download a maps app that works in Malaysia and drive defensively.
