Final round interview asks 'expected salary', how not to lowball myself?

Got to the final round for a mid-level role at a bank. HR is asking for my expected salary and I'm scared to quote too high and get rejected, or too low and lose money. How do you all handle this in Singapore?

From my experience, never give the first number if you can avoid it. When HR asks, I say 'I'm open, but could you share the budgeted range for this role first?' Many will tell you. If they push, quote a range based on real market data, not your current pay. I check MyCareersFuture listings, Glassdoor, and ask friends in the same industry to get a realistic band, then I quote the upper-middle of it. For a jump, aim for 15 to 25 percent above current if your skills justify it. Also separate base from AWS and variable bonus when you compare. Say the number calmly and don't over-explain. Anchoring high but reasonable usually lands you a better offer.

I used to blurt out my current salary and it capped every offer. Now I frame it around total package. I say something like: 'My current total comp including AWS and bonus is around X, and for this move I'm looking in the range of Y to Z.' That way they know your baseline is the full package, not just base. Also do your homework on the role's seniority; a bank AVP versus manager can differ a lot. If they lowball, ask if there's flexibility on sign-on bonus or extra leave. Stay polite and never sound desperate. Worst case you negotiate, best case they meet your range. Salary is a big decision so also factor CPF and benefits, not just cash.
