PSLE stress is killing our family vibe, how did you cope?

My Primary 6 kid is under so much pressure and honestly so are we as parents. The tuition, the mock papers, the constant comparison with other kids. I feel like our home has become a study camp. How did you keep your sanity and your relationship with your child during PSLE year?

I'll be honest, I was the kiasu dad piling on assessment books and I regret how tense I made that year. What turned it around was my kid breaking down one night, and I realised I was chasing my own ego. We cut tuition from three subjects to one, focused on their weakest area only, and freed up time for rest and play. Result was actually better because a rested kid learns more than a burnt-out one. My advice: quality over quantity of study, and watch your child's mental state closely. If you see signs of real anxiety or sleep issues, ease off and consider talking to the school counsellor. Their wellbeing comes first.

Been through PSLE twice with my two kids. The biggest thing that saved us was accepting early that PSLE is not the end of the world, and actually saying that out loud to my child. The pressure kids feel often comes from sensing our anxiety, so I made myself chill first. We set fixed study hours but protected family dinner and one fun outing weekly, non-negotiable. My kid did fine, not top scorer, but got into a school that suited them and thrived. Looking back, the relationship damage from over-pushing isn't worth those few extra points. Kids remember how you made them feel, not their PSLE T-score. Guard the relationship.
