How to answer the 'why do you want to leave your current job' question honestly?

I'm job hunting because my current boss is a nightmare and the culture is toxic, but I know I can't say that in an interview. How did you all handle this question without lying but also without badmouthing your employer?

I interview candidates regularly, so here's what I actually think when I ask this. I'm not expecting a fairy tale, I know most people leave because of a boss or pay. What I'm assessing is your maturity and how you handle a difficult situation. Candidates who trash their employer immediately raise a red flag for me. The best answers acknowledge the growth they got, then pivot to what they're seeking next. You can even say honestly that you're looking for stronger leadership or a healthier culture, phrased neutrally, that's fine and I respect the honesty. Just don't get emotional or specific with complaints. Show me you can be professional even about a bad situation, that's the real test.

Golden rule: never badmouth, even if your boss is genuinely terrible, because the interviewer will wonder if you'll do the same to them later. I always reframe it positively, focus on what I'm moving towards rather than running from. Something like: I've learned a lot in my current role but I'm looking for more growth in X area and your company offers exactly that. It's honest without the drama. If they probe about culture, I'd say I'm looking for an environment that better fits my working style, and leave it there. Keep it professional and forward-looking. Interviewers can usually read between the lines anyway, they've heard it all. Dignity and diplomacy win here.
