PSLE stress is destroying my P6 kid, how to cope as a parent?

My son is in Primary 6 and the PSLE pressure is intense. He's anxious, not sleeping well, and I catch myself nagging and getting angry which makes it worse. How do you all support your child through PSLE without everyone burning out?

From my experience, your child mirrors your stress, so the first fix is you. I forced myself to stop hovering and comparing with other kids on the parent chat groups, which honestly are toxic during PSLE season. We set a fixed study routine with proper breaks, protected sleep at all costs, and kept one non-negotiable fun activity a week. For revision, I let his teachers lead and just supported at home rather than becoming a second tutor. What helped most was telling him clearly that we love him regardless of the score, and meaning it. PSLE feels like the end of the world but it is one exam. With the new scoring bands, the pressure to chase a single T-score is lower than in our time. Protect his mental health first.

I've been through PSLE with two kids and the second time was much calmer because I stopped micromanaging. Kids can't focus when a parent is anxious over their shoulder. Practical things that worked: a simple weekly plan the child helps create so he feels ownership, past-year papers done under timed conditions to build confidence, and cutting screen time gently rather than banning it and causing a fight. Watch for real anxiety signs like not sleeping and loss of appetite, and don't brush them off. If it gets serious, the school counsellor is free and helpful, and you can speak to a GP. Remember there are many secondary school and later pathways, so one exam does not define his future. Model calm and he will feel safer.
