Where can you still get a proper hawker meal under $5 in 2026?

Everything at hawker centres seems to have crept past 5 dollars now. I'm on a tight budget and miss the days of a cheap good plate. Where are you all still finding proper, filling hawker meals for 5 bucks or less? Real spots please.

Still very doable if you know where to look, just avoid the touristy and CBD centres. My go-tos: economy rice with one meat two veg still lands around 4 to 4.50 at heartland coffeeshops if you choose the cheaper dishes. A plate of chicken rice at older neighbourhood stalls, plain fishball noodles, and thosai or roti prata with dhal at Indian stalls are still budget champions. Look for hawker centres in mature estates away from town, prices there haven't exploded like the CBD. Also the government-run social enterprise hawker centres and older markets often have a couple of stalls with genuinely cheap options. Pro tip, go slightly off peak so the aunty has time to be generous, and skip the drink, that's often where the extra dollar sneaks in. It's harder than before but 5 dollars still eats if you're strategic.

Economy rice is the undefeated budget king if you order smart, rice plus egg plus veg plus tofu can be under 4. The trap is adding two meats and suddenly it's 6.50. I eat mostly vegetarian dishes at the cai png stall on tight weeks and it's filling and cheap. Also plain prata is like a dollar something, two of those with dhal fills you up.

Check the social enterprise hawker centres and the older wet-market food centres in your area, some still cap certain dishes below 5 as part of their model. Also the coffeeshops inside older HDB blocks, not the fancy renovated ones, tend to be cheaper. The newer air-conditioned food courts are where prices really jumped.
