Is a big hotel wedding banquet worth it or should we do something smaller?

Both sides of the family expect a proper hotel banquet with 30+ tables, but that's easily 50-70k. We'd rather use that for our flat and reno. How do you balance family expectations with not going broke?

Did the big banquet and honestly it mostly broke even after ang bao, so let me demystify the money first. For a hotel banquet in SG, guest ang bao typically covers a large chunk of the per-table cost, sometimes you come close to breaking even or a small loss, so it's rarely "50k gone", more like a manageable net cost. The trap is the extras: gown packages, videography, favours, that's where budgets balloon. My advice: separate the "who's paying" conversation from the "what we want" one. Sit both families down and ask directly, are they expecting it because they'll help fund and invite their guests, or is it just assumed? If it's their guest list driving 30 tables, it's fair they contribute. If you truly prefer a smaller solemnisation plus intimate lunch, that's increasingly common and totally valid, frame it as "we're prioritising our home". Your marriage, your call, but do the actual ang bao math before you decide it's unaffordable.

We did a small restaurant banquet, maybe 10 tables of people we actually care about, and put the rest toward reno. No regrets. The 30-table hotel thing is often more about the parents' face than the couple. Have the honest talk, you might find they're relieved too.

Whatever you pick, don't start married life in debt for one night. The flat and reno serve you for decades, the banquet is a few hours. We booked an off-peak weekday lunch banquet, significantly cheaper than Saturday dinner, and guests didn't mind at all.

If the parents insist on the big one for their guests, a fair compromise: they invite and cover their portion of tables, you cover yours. That's how we split it. Cleared up a lot of tension once money and guest lists were tied together honestly.
