Mid-career switch at 38 into tech, is it too late?

I'm 38, been in traditional sales my whole career, and thinking of switching into a tech-related role. I'm worried I'm too old and everyone in tech seems to be in their 20s. Has anyone here made a mid-career switch successfully in Singapore?

I made a mid-career pivot around 40 and the biggest hurdle was mindset, not age. Employers here are increasingly open to career switchers, partly because of government pushes to reskill the workforce. My advice: don't try to fake being a fresh grad, position yourself as someone bringing industry experience plus new skills. Use the SkillsFuture Career Transition programmes and conversion schemes that are designed exactly for people like us, some even pay you a training allowance while you learn. Be realistic that you might take a small pay dip initially to enter, but you climb faster because of your maturity. Start upskilling in your own time now to show initiative. Tap your existing network, someone you know can often open a door. I earn more now than in my old field, so keep the long view.

From my experience, 38 is not too late, and your sales background is actually an asset in tech, think roles like sales engineering, customer success, product marketing or partnerships, where domain and people skills matter more than coding. I switched in my late 30s and leaned on my transferable strengths rather than trying to become a fresh junior developer competing with 22-year-olds. Look at the government-supported reskilling programmes and career conversion schemes, there are subsidised courses through SkillsFuture and industry conversion programmes for mid-career switchers. Build one concrete proof point, a certification or a small portfolio project, so recruiters see commitment. Network into companies rather than only applying cold. Frame your age as experience and reliability. Plenty of employers value maturity. It's a real adjustment but very doable if you target roles that build on what you already have.
