Confused about CPF top-ups, is topping up my SA actually worth it?

Everyone online keeps saying top up your CPF Special Account for the compound interest and tax relief. But I'm in my early 30s and locking money away till 55 feels scary. For those who've been topping up, do you feel it was the right call or do you regret the illiquidity?

I've been doing voluntary top-ups to my SA for a few years and honestly no regrets, but I want to be balanced. The pros are real: the risk-free interest is attractive and the tax relief under the scheme reduces my income tax each year, which for a middle-to-higher earner is meaningful. The downside you correctly sense is liquidity, that money is locked for retirement, full stop. My approach: I only top up money I'm 100 percent sure I won't need before 55, after keeping a solid emergency fund and my other investments. Don't top up your last dollar. It's a great tool for retirement discipline, but it should be surplus money. Do your own sums with the CPF calculators and consider your full financial picture, not just the hype.

I deliberately went slow on CPF top-ups in my early 30s and I don't regret it, different philosophy. My reasoning was that in my 30s I valued flexibility, I might need capital for opportunities, further studies, or emergencies, and locking cash till 55 didn't fit my stage. I focused on building liquid savings and investments I could access first. Now that I'm more settled with a stronger safety net, I've started topping up more aggressively for the tax relief and compounding. So my take is it's not wrong, it's about timing and your life stage. The tax relief is nice but don't let it drive you to over-lock money you might need. Build your liquid foundation first, then top up the surplus. Check the official CPF info and maybe a fee-only adviser for your situation.
