Want to start a small side hustle while working full-time, where to begin?

I have a stable full-time job but want extra income and maybe eventually my own thing. Thinking of selling online or freelancing. Any real experiences on starting a side hustle in Singapore without quitting my job or getting into trouble?

From my experience, first check your employment contract for any conflict-of-interest or moonlighting clause, because some companies restrict side work, especially if it competes with them. As long as you're clear there, start small and lean. I began freelancing on weekends before investing any real money, to test if there was actual demand. Register a sole proprietorship with ACRA only when you're making steady income or need a business name for invoicing, it's cheap and simple. Track your earnings because side income is taxable and you must declare it to IRAS. Keep it fully separate from your day job hours and resources so you don't get into trouble at work. Don't quit until the side income is consistent and meaningful. Reinvest early profits and grow slowly. The biggest mistake is spending big upfront before proving people will pay.

I run a small online shop on the side and my advice is to validate before you spend. I started by selling to test demand using free platforms and my own social media before buying stock in bulk. Cash flow kills small businesses, so don't overcommit money you can't afford to lose. Practically: open a separate bank account to keep business and personal money clear, keep simple records of income and expenses, and remember to declare the income to IRAS at tax time. Register with ACRA when it makes sense. Manage your energy too, because juggling a full-time job and a hustle burns you out fast if you don't set limits. Start with something you can do in a few hours a week and scale only when it's proven. Be careful signing up for any 'get rich' courses, most are not worth it.
