Stuck as senior exec for 4 years, how to break into manager?

I've been a senior executive in a local SME for four years and my pay has barely moved. My boss keeps saying 'next year' but nothing happens. Should I jump ship or keep waiting for the internal promotion?

From my experience, the fastest way to a manager title in Singapore is often to jump, not to wait. I stayed 5 years hoping for internal promotion and only moved up after switching companies, where I negotiated the title upfront. Before you leave, quietly build proof of manager-level work: lead a project end to end, mentor a junior, own a budget line. Put these on your CV as achievements with numbers. When interviewing, ask directly what the promotion track looks like and get it in writing in the offer. Loyalty is nice but SMEs here rarely reward it with pay. Line up the new role first, then resign professionally with proper notice so you keep the reference.

I was in the same boat and what worked was having one honest conversation with a clear ask. I told my boss exactly what I wanted: the manager title, a specific salary band, and a timeline of six months with milestones. Vague 'next year' talk means no plan, so I forced a plan. I also asked what gaps I needed to close, then closed them and sent a short monthly update so it was undeniable. When the six months passed with no movement, I knew it was time and started applying. Document everything in email. Either they commit properly or you get clarity to leave without guilt.
